As thirty-something travelers, our favourite trips are the ones that force us to put down our phones and adapt. Renting a 4x4 in Muscat and driving out into the rugged vastness of Oman did exactly that. Oman feels like Arabia in its purest form—unforgiving mountain peaks, emerald-green canyon oases, and vast desert stretches where hospitality is an art form.

If you're looking for an adventure that combines raw landscapes with seamless road-tripping, this route through northern Oman delivers.

Days 1–2: Coastal Canyons & Turquoise Pools

• Morning (Muscat to Wadi Shab): Pick up your 4x4 in Muscat and drive south along the coastal highway, where sharp limestone cliffs drop directly into the Gulf of Oman.

• Afternoon (Hiking Wadi Shab): Arrive at Wadi Shab. Take a brief boat shuttle across the river entrance, then hike 45 minutes into the gorge over boulder-strewn paths. The trail ends where the canyon fills with turquoise water—swim through narrow rock openings to reach a hidden waterfall inside a cave.

• Evening in Sur: Drive to the coastal town of Sur, famous for its historic wooden dhow shipbuilding yards. Eat fresh grilled kingfish at a seaside eatery as the sun sets over the harbor lighthouse.

Days 3–4: Red Sands & Desert Nights

• Morning (Wadi Bani Khalid): Drive inland toward Wadi Bani Khalid, a striking contrast to the surrounding desert with its wide, palm-shaded freshwater pools.

• Afternoon (Entering Wahiba Sands): Deflate your tires at the edge of the desert and venture into the rolling red dunes of Wahiba Sands.

• Night Under the Stars: Stay at an eco-camp deep in the dunes. Climb the highest ridge for sunset, watch the sand turn deep orange, and spend the night dining on slow-cooked lamb around a campfire under an brilliant canopy of stars.

Days 5–7: Mountain Passes & Ancient Villages

• Ascent to Jebel Akhdar: Head high into the Hajar Mountains via steep, winding switchbacks. The cool mountain air feels like a completely different climate zone.

• Exploring Misfat al Abriyeen: Walk through the mud-brick mountain village of Misfat al Abriyeen, built into the canyon walls. Follow the falaj (ancient irrigation channels) through terraced date gardens and pomegranate orchards.

• Nizwa Souq & Fort: Wrap up your trip in Nizwa. Explore its towering 17th-century round fort and wander through the bustling souq, picking up frankincense, silver daggers (khanjars), and fresh dates before driving back to Muscat.
